Brightline West updates

Every update is dated and linked to where it came from: company releases, filings, agencies, or named news reports.

This page tracks Brightline West, the privately developed high-speed rail project between Las Vegas and Southern California. We check new information against the most primary source we can find:

  • the company's own press releases and its construction reports filed on the MSRB's EMMA system;
  • agencies such as the FRA and SBCTA;
  • securities filings.

When a fact comes only from a news report, we name the outlet. We don't predict outcomes. The newest item is first.

  1. Project

    Brightline West briefs the SBCTA board

    Brightline West representatives briefed the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority board on construction, project development and the company’s pursuit of federal loan financing. SBCTA says board members were particularly interested in High Desert commuters: lining up train schedules with morning and evening commutes, and fares that complement Metrolink.

  2. Construction

    Field investigation work moves to Rancho Cucamonga

    Brightline West announced geotechnical drilling and utility clearing along Jersey Boulevard in Rancho Cucamonga on Oct 13 and Oct 15. It said no field investigation work was scheduled in Nevada that week.

  3. Financing

    Florida bankruptcy doesn't change West plans, company says; target is late 2029

    Certain Brightline Florida parent entities began prearranged Chapter 11 processes. The operating train company, Brightline Trains Florida LLC, did not file. A Brightline West spokesperson told the Review-Journal that the West project is a separate entity and that the bankruptcy “has no bearing” on its plans. The paper reported:

    • the goal is now service in late 2029;
    • the project’s price rose from $9 billion to $20.1 billion;
    • work on the Las Vegas station parking garage appears to have halted, with no crews seen on site for several months.

  4. Financing

    Bondholders extend the $400M equity deadline to Nov 2

    Brightline West filed a company update on EMMA with two Fifth Supplemental Indentures, one for the California bonds and one for the Nevada bonds. They change the “Equity Contribution Condition Deadline” from Sept. 10 to Nov. 2, 2026 (EMMA event notice, Sep 9, 2026). That condition requires at least $400 million of equity (EMMA notice, Nov 21, 2025). The Bond Buyer reported it as the fifth amended agreement with bondholders. In the same update, the company said it:

    • expects federal due diligence on its $6 billion RRIF loan to finish no later than October, after which a formal invitation to apply starts a 90-day review (Bloomberg Law says a decision could slip into January);
    • put the remaining budget to complete the project at about $20.9 billion under executed contracts.

    Sarah Watterson is no longer Brightline West’s president. She now serves as a special adviser, per a Rocket Companies filing announcing her appointment to its board. Bloomberg reported that Managing Director Mike Reininger remains responsible for delivering the project.

    Bondholders allow release of up to $50M in withheld bond proceeds

    Brightline West’s April 2026 construction report, filed on the MSRB’s EMMA system, says:

    • on April 30, 2026, bondholders consented to release up to $50.0 million of withheld bond proceeds;
    • Las Vegas station construction was adjusted to the financial plan;
